Cars and insurance for 1st time drivers?

My girl has just passed her test and I’m looking to get a little cheap cars sorted for her as a run around.

It looks like the days of getting cheap cars for kids has changed and they all seem to get new cars on lease but I’m old school so I want a banger that lasts a year of 2 for little cash.

What is the best older, smaller car to buy, maintain and insure? I’m thinking the VW Fox but open to suggestions?

Kia Picantos seem to have service histories due to the 7 year warranty, plenty of five doors around and the 1litre 3 pot isnt gutless around town on can hold its own on the A roads.

That would be my suggestion.

Congrats to your daughter, I feel for youngsters these days with black boxes, cameras and loading of their insurance for the first 4 years it doesn't seem to give them the sense of freedom we got when we first got on the road

For insurance check GoCompare - good prices and they have an offer where you can claim back the excess if involved in an accident.
Complete fucking lottery for cheap second/third hand cars - you never really know what you are getting into.

If it’s simply a runaround get a second hand Smart. Cheap as chips to run and only £20 rft per year. Fully emission compliant too.

As an added advantage a two seater car means she will not be prevailed upon by too many “mates” at once for a lift.

Always a risk buying cheap second hand cars. My youngest daughter passed her test 2 and a half years ago I found what I thought was the safe option a 08 plate Fiesta for about £1300. Cheap to run, parts always available, which was just as well as the poxy thing was always going wrong. After 9 months she couldn't be bothered with it anymore. WhenToomey's in Southend offered her a monkey for it in a lease deal for a 68 plate Vauxhall Adam she took it. She has now moved onto a Brand new Vauxhall Corsa which surprisingly she managed to insure cheaply for 800 quid. She is earning good money so good luck to her.

Assuming you’re looking for a small car given the models discussed, look at a Mazda 2 or a Honda Jazz - parts are a bit more expensive, but that’s not really an issue as the cars themselves are very reliable.

I had a 10 plate Honda Civic for years and about 18 months ago bought a 66 plate Mazda 3 - never had to pay for anything other than annual servicing on either

It's criminal the cost for young people to drive these days. Get a throwaway 15 year old Ford Focus or Fiesta. Insurance will be crazy as it is on any car but are pretty reliable, parts are cheap and they will probably have tons of dents and scratches already. Avoid the diesels though as they are money pits if the car is old.

Do research on the exact model. I got my son a Peugeot 107, a small cheap run around. You would be amazed how many different insurance groups the 107 range covers from a group 1 to a group 9. Really subtle differences make a big difference, not just the obvious boy racer models.

Something like a Corsa is best for first car. You won't get car insurance without a black box these days, having said that you will find it a lot cheaper than you think.

I bought a Fox on the scrappage scheme, Brazilian made, tinny horrible car, gearbox went on 35k.

If she can afford the payments look for a deal on a new car with free insurance.

You also have piece of mind breakdown etc

If its going to be expensive regardless, you might as well bit the bullet and go for a 2 year old Aston Martin Vantage.

Save your money and get her a bike. You cant get enough of cyclists hogging the lanes 2 a breast, preventing you from overtaking or going beyond 20 mph

Was in this situation last year, daughter picked up an older but very low mileage Ford Ka. Basic and old-school but a lot of fun and less punishing on the insurance than many. Higher budget, probably the best all rounder we saw was the Kia Picanto, most were going around £3.5k up.
Most these days seem to want a F500 as a starter, not cheap though.

Depends how much you want to spend, age & mileage?
You don't get much for 2k these days though there are still some bargains around.
The Fox is probably the worst VW. Tiny and very basic.
Fiesta, Polo, Clio if you have the cash, or look at the smaller Chevrolets, Hyundais or Mitsubishis for the real value, not the coolest though, but reliable, you'll pick a low mileage not so old one up for under 2k.
